If you are from Central Arkansas, you have likely attended Toad Suck Daze at least once. Each spring thousands of people gather in downtown Conway to celebrate this quirky and fun-filled festival. Within this festival there are several activities, ranging from carnival rides, live music, shopping, half marathons, bicycle races and the most important tradition of all, the world championship toad races. To any other person, this tradition might seem odd, but for those in Central Arkansas, it is a cherished and renowned symbol of the heart of the festival. Many kids can't wait until the festival rolls around as they scavenge and collect the best toads in anticipation of the big race.

The Colorful Tale Behind Toad Suck Daze

While most people attend Toad Suck Daze, few can tell the rich history behind the beloved festival. The origin of the name “Toad Suck” dates back to the era of steamboats. These steamboats traveled up and down the Arkansas River, and when the water levels became too low crews would dock and wait out the tides.

There is one specific stop that was notorious for these crews – a tavern that was located near what is now the Toad Suck Lock and Dam. The crews passed time by drinking and relaxing at the tavern despite the “dismay of the folks living nearby, who said, ‘They suck on the bottle ’til they swell up like toads.’” This inspired the name “Toad Suck Daze.” While this may be a tall tale, the name stuck and some Arkansans prefer to keep this colorful tavern story alive.

Conway’s Free Festival That Fuels Futures

Since 1982, Toad Suck Daze has been a big staple in the Central Arkansas community. The festival began by the Arkansas River banks but due to flooding, it was moved to downtown Conway 30 years ago, where it remains. The goal of this festival has not only been to attract visitors and raise awareness for downtown Conway but also to raise money for local education.

In 1985, Toad Suck Daze awarded its first scholarship, and since then has contributed around $2.2 million to scholarships, scholarship endowments, preschool funding, and other education initiatives. The festival also raises and donates money to develop and beautify the community within downtown Conway.

Another important fact to note is that while there may be activities that you pay to do, the entry fee is free! How awesome is that?

A Homegrown Tradition

Toad Suck Daze is such a special, defining event in the heart of Arkansas, and its story must be told and kept alive. What began as a small, local festival has grown into one of the state's most cherished traditions, full of family entertainment, local talent and a strong community mission. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a visitor, Toad Suck Daze offers seemingly endless fun and local pride that keeps people coming back year after year.
