Documentaries share stories of people, places of Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. (Arkansas PBS) — Arkansas PBS continues its summer tour guide series in July with original local productions featuring historic people and landmarks from The Natural State every other Thursday at 7 p.m.

Beginning Thursday, July 3, the schedule will include:

“Unveiled: Daisy Bates and Johnny Cash” – July 3 at 7 p.m.
For more than a century, National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol has displayed two statues from each state, recognizing remarkable individuals whose achievements reflect and contribute to the nation’s collective identity. This film – an original documentary from Arkansas PBS and award-winning filmmaker Nathan Willis – explores the creation and installation of Arkansas’s newest statues and the enduring legacies of two of the state’s most iconic figures.

“Arkansas Dairy Bars: Neat Eats & Cool Treats” – July 17 at 7 p.m.
A popular mid-century sight all across America, dairy bars thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nature of dairy bars – restaurants where customers generally order ice cream and burgers through a window – boosted business in a time of limited indoor dining options. Kat Robinson – Arkansas food historian, author, travel writer and enthusiastic foodie – visited dairy bars in every corner of the state to compile a culinary tour guide in this documentary.

“From the Archives: Historic Bridges of Arkansas” – July 31 at 7 p.m.
Some bridges still standing in Arkansas are nearly as old as the state itself, but each year several of these structures are being lost to the ravages of time and the demands of a modern roadway system. This film shares the stories of these bridges, told by those who photograph, build and remember these historic places. Created in partnership with the Arkansas Highway Department.
