Few families can claim to have left as lasting a mark on aviation as the Younkins of Northwest Arkansas. Their story – spanning nearly 60 years of innovation, artistry and breathtaking performances in the skies – is the subject of Arkansas independent filmmaker Beth Lewis’s documentary, “Artistry in Air: The Story of the Younkins.” The film will premiere on Arkansas PBS as part of our Made in Arkansas series and stream online at myarpbs.org/live on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
From Engineer to Aviation Icon
The journey begins with Jim Younkin, an engineer whose groundbreaking invention of a new autopilot series revolutionized aviation technology. His ingenuity not only raised industry standards but also fueled his passion for restoring and recreating historic aircraft with stunning precision.
Taking the Skies by Storm
Jim’s son, Bobby Younkin, carried the family name into a new arena – aerobatics. Known as one of the premier airshow performers of his generation, Bobby wowed crowds with daring stunts and unmatched skill.
That passion for the skies carried forward to the third generation. Matt and Amanda Younkin, following in their father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, forged their own paths in aviation. Matt has become one of the most celebrated airshow pilots performing today, while Amanda, alongside her husband and fellow airshow pilot Kyle Franklin, helped develop new and innovative aerial performances.
Triumphs and Tragedies
The Younkins’ story isn’t without heartbreak. Across three generations, the family has endured profound tragedy – but their resilience and love of flight have ensured that their legacy endures. Today, the Younkin name remains synonymous with artistry, innovation and dedication in aviation.
