Start off 2012 right with the first episode of “Exploring Arkansas” premiering January 2 and shot and aired in HD – now you can see your Natural State with even more precise beauty.  This new episode includes trips to some truly unexpected places you can’t always find in Arkansas.  And believe me, you won’t want to miss Chuck in a pirate’s shirt.  What struck me is how appropriate it looks on him.  A previous life as a pirate explorer me thinks?  I’m not too sure I’m that far off with that one mateys.

Chuck takes us to three places, but in particular treats us to something truly special, to the replicas of the Nina and Pinta that docked in Little Rock’s Riverfront Park recently serving as traveling museums for school groups and visitors.  Board the ships with Chuck and learn about the past while enjoying a guided tour all set on the Arkansas River.  Feel free to wear an eye patch and grab that parrot you have been wanting for so long.  You’ll feel right at home.

One of the largest Civil War reenactments in Arkansas takes place every other year the first Saturday in November at Historic Washington State Park near Hope with more than 200 reenactors usually participating.  Tag along with Chuck for this look at the past.

Start out your New Year right with Chuck and Petit Jean Mountain.  In a combined effort involving the Army Corps of Engineers, the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission and the private sector, a man-made habitat has been established for the endangered Least Terns and other waterfowl on the Arkansas River near Petit Jean Mountain.

I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions, but I do believe in making good choices and having purpose.  Make a commitment this year to your family and your state to check out the beauty right outside your door – take a trip to a State or National Park and breathe in the peace and calm that is nature.  (And FYI it’s a lot cheaper and more fun than therapy).

Let Chuck help plan your trip at our new “Exploring Arkansas” website coming this spring.  You can search for where you want to go by region, activity, season or topography.  Read Chuck’s blog, eyeball his top 10 lists, watch past episodes, check out our photo gallery, plan your trip and more.

TUNE IN Monday, January 2 at 6:30 p.m. for the new "Exploring Arkansas" in HD.
