During a brand new episode of "Exploring Arkansas" on Monday, April 1, well first take you to Mt. Nebo near Dardanelle. Named after the mountain in the Bible from which Moses saw a view of the Promised Land, Mt. Nebo is well known as a launching area with hang glider pilots. Our segment though, will explore the lesser-known cascade and waterfall along Gum Springs Trail.
The town of Hardy in north Arkansas will be our next stop. Hardy boasts of being the smallest town in the state with an official Main Street program. (pop. 720) There are forty-one buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Quaint shops are all along Main Street such as one for quilts..one for Ozark crafts in general..one for pottery and another for dulcimers, just to bring out a few. Besides all the neat shops, theres also the infamous Spring River nearby for some excellent trout fishing after you finish all your shopping.
Well close out this new episode with a hike to Granny Hendersons old homestead along the Buffalo National River. This was a woman who became one of the most legendary and beloved residents of the Ozarks. Her real name was Eva Barnes Henderson. But, to all who knew her, she was simply called Granny. Grannys way of life without electricity, telephone or plumbing and living alone with her animals, inspired a National Geographic magazine article in the 1970s. We made our hike to her cabin with another author who interviewed her for a book. This was the first time in 33 years Blair Dietering had been back since writing his book and before leaving, he put up laminated photos he took of Granny as a memorial..and so that others would see the remarkable woman who once lived there.
