The first new “Exploring Arkansas” for 2015 includes fly-fishing with a world champion gold medalist, float-fishing for smallmouth bass and spending time with a log master craftsman – all coming up Monday, Jan. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
Chuck Farneth of Heber Springs is an ESPN Great Outdoor Games fly-fishing gold medalist. So, we thought what better person to learn a few fly-fishing techniques than from this guy? Thus, we set out on the Little Red River to go after the rainbow and brown trout. This experience is actually available to anyone who wants to get out and enjoy learning from one of the world’s best as far as fly-fishing goes. Farneth’s outings involve trips from one to two days … on up to ten days, if you so desire.
Our fishing adventure continues as we head out on the South Fork of the Spring River near Salem and float-fish for smallmouth bass. This stream has been designated by the State of Arkansas as an official Quality Smallmouth Stream. Our four-hour or so float provided us with the results to back up that designation! Oh, yeah!
Finally, we’ll spend some time with someone who’s been designated by the Arkansas Arts Council as one of Arkansas’ Living Treasures. Robert Runyan, who lives near Winslow, is a log master craftsman who builds log structure masterpieces the way they were built during medieval Europe, using the “Scandinavian scribe” technique.
