Frolicking throughout Camden’s millions of daffodils, getting a haircut in the oldest barbershop in the nation, attending the Arkansas Outdoor School and having lunch at the iconic Pickens Store and Restaurant: it’s all coming up during a brand new edition of “Exploring Arkansas,” Wednesday, June 7.
If you love flowers, then the Camden Daffodil Festival is a must-visit. Held the second weekend in March, this festival comprises of tours visiting Camden’s several daffodil gardens. One of the stops – at the Grace Hill Estate – features “Dining With the Daffodils” with tables on the back lawn, during which guests are entertained by roaming violinists and Southern belles in their hoop skirts.
On the town square of Pocahontas, you’ll find the Sanitary Barber Shop. It opened its doors in 1894, and may very well be not only Arkansas’ oldest, but the nation’s oldest continuously operating barbershop. David Langston has been the barber there since 1968.
It’s called the Arkansas Outdoor School, held at the 4-H Center in Ferndale. This unique program helps educators connect their students to the natural world by taking them out of the classroom and into the great outdoors. Students learn life skills while participating in engaging, hands-on activities.
On the Pickens Plantation south of Dumas is the Pickens Store and Restaurant. This popular eatery packs ‘em in for lunch, which is famous for its down-home country cooking and homemade desserts.
