Taking a flight back in time aboard a B-17 “Flying Fortress”; being mesmerized at Red Bluff Overlook along the Buffalo National River; taking a stroll through Historic Calico Rock and experiencing early America at the White County Pioneer Village in Searcy – it’s all coming up in a brand new “Exploring Arkansas” episode, Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m.!
It was one of World War II’s famous so-called “War Birds.” The B-17 bomber was indeed a “flying fortress” equipped not only with bombs, but also a slew of machine guns mounted top, bottom, side and just about everywhere else. One of a handful that is still airworthy flew in to Conway’s Cantrell Field Airport recently to offer the flight of a lifetime to a few lucky folks. (Yes, we nudged our way in and stowed away in the tail section, heh…heh…heh.)
The Red Bluff Overlook near Gilbert, in the middle section of the Buffalo National River, is probably one of the easiest overlooks to get to along the entire river. Eighty feet or so off a dirt road is pretty darn close – just watch that you don’t slide down the steep embankment and go catapulting down into the river!
Historic Calico Rock is one of those towns you only see in movies. It was once a riverboat town and then a railroad town, and now it’s just a neat ol’ town to go to and spend some time. Inside the museum, you can get an excellent history lesson. At the Arts and Science Center – yes, I did say “Arts and Science Center” – you can view an impressive art gallery and experience a crime lab! And, if that’s not enough, across Calico Creek is East Calico, which just happens to be a ghost town.
Searcy’s Pioneer Village is a charming collection of historic buildings brought together to re-create an early American town – general store, train depot, school house/church, log house and – what you might say is the original “man cave” – a frontier-style trapper’s cabin. (Yes, I spent most of the time in there – ha!)
