From exploring one of the latest Nature Conservancy preserves and enjoying Pogue Springs to touring Historic Cane Hill and devouring a “Big Pig” at the Susie Q Malt Shop drive-in at Rogers – it’s all in the new edition of “Exploring Arkansas” Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 6:30 p.m.!
The old town of Bluffton north of Clinton may be long gone, but the site and the beautiful stream that runs through the land is now maintained by the Nature Conservancy as Bluffton Preserve. Archey Fork of the Little Red River is home to a variety of rare species, including the yellowcheek darter – a minnow-like fish known for its darting behavior in the water. This stream is also great for small mouth bass and sunfish!
Pogue Springs is a nice hidden gem, just a few miles down Highway 14 from the entrance to Blanchard Springs Caverns. But, if you’re not observing closely, you’ll miss the tiny brown Pogue Springs sign that’s at the dirt road that leading down to this tranquil area along North Sylamore Creek.
Historic Cane Hill, southwest of Fayetteville, is just that – historic – in that it boasts of 16 structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And that list includes one of the state’s first colleges. It’s been said that Cane Hill was Fayetteville before Fayetteville!
Happy days are here again at the Susie Q Malt Shop in Rogers! From malts and shakes to “Big Daddy” burgers and the famous “Big Pig” – one of the state’s few pork tenderloin sandwiches – it has all the classics! (Not to mention “cruise-ins” with classic cars, which are held throughout the year.) So, grab the poodle skirt along with a flat-top haircut, and join in on all the fun, Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 6:30 p.m. Doo-wop-a-doo-ah!!
