Aircraft from the Golden Age of Aviation, visiting the place where the “man in black” grew up, and wild and woolly rawhide adventure racing chuckwagons – it’s all on the next brand new episode of “Exploring Arkansas,” Monday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. 

A colorful history of aviation in Arkansas and American military conflicts can be experienced at the Arkansas Air & Military Museum at Drake Field in Fayetteville. The aircraft are housed in two hangers – one of which is all-wood and just as historic as the planes; it served one of the country’s many aviator training posts during World War II.  The planes on exhibit date all the way back to World War I and up to the jet age. After touring, you can also take a plane with you – in kit form that is – from the gift shop.   

   

Country music legend Johnny Cash’s boyhood home has recently been restored and open for tours in Dyess.  Originally from Kingsland, the Cash family moved to Dyess in 1935, which was set up as a Depression-era agricultural resettlement colony. Needless to say, growing up on the Delta played a significant role in influencing Cash’s music later.  With help from the Cash family, the house and the furnishings – even down to the family pictures,  are exactly the way they were when they lived there.

 

If your life isn’t wild and woolly enough, then make it a point next Labor Day weekend to attend the National Championship Chuckwagon Races in Clinton. I GUARONTEE you’ll be entertained with full-blown, rawhide, crazy fun to last you for quite awhile!  Let me tell you – these folks are SERIOUS when it comes to racing these wagons and nothing … I mean NOTHING … stands in their way!
