The Smittle Band formed two years ago and features vocalist Stephanie Smittle from Cave Springs, Arkansas. Unlike most bands, before ever playing live, the group emerged from an intense song writing phase to produce its first CD, "Bright Street," in October 2010. "Bright Street" features the songwriting of Smittle and Wythe Walker. The sound has been described as "jazzy Americana" with a pop sensibility, and echoes Stephanie's childhood Baptist church stylings. John Tarpley at The Arkansas Times describes the band's sound as.."A Prairie Home Companion with aquavit," and Philip Martin at the Arkansas Democrat Gazette labels the group "a smooth swinging Dan Hicks for NPR listeners." Smittle's vocals have been described as smooth, heartfelt, smoky and voluptuous. Walker's guitar work is melodic, rootsy and sharp. Bassist John Davies spent a decade with The Cate Brothers and several years on the road with Michael Burkes. McGehee brings classical, jazz and blues patterns to the mix. Wittenberg backs with sparse percussion from a small kit. The band performs primarily original material.
