'Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey' season two premieres Jan. 8

Posted 30 Dec 2011

“Downton Abbey,” winner of six Primetime Emmy Awards, and nominated for four Golden Globes will premiere its second season on the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) Sunday, Jan. 8, at 9 p.m. and air Sundays through Feb. 19 at 9 each night.

“Downton Abbey” season two resumes its story of love and intrigue at an English country estate, now mobilized for the trauma of war. Returning cast includes: Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Siobhan Finneran and many more.

Last season opened with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, which had dire consequences for Downton Abbey. The new season picks up in the middle of another disaster, World War I, which affected every aspect of life in England, accelerating the social change that was already transforming an age-old system of class and privilege.

“Downton Abbey” season two is a Carnival/Masterpiece co-production, written and created by Julian Fellowes.

“Masterpiece Classic” is presented by WGBH Boston, and funding for “Masterpiece” is provided by Viking River Cruises with additional support from public television viewers.
