The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) recognizes Mental Illness Awareness Week and focuses on major depressive disorder in adults in the live, call-in program "Healing Minds. Changing Attitudes." airing Tuesday, Oct.8, at 7 p.m.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 6.7 percent of adults in the United States experience major depressive disorder each year, making it one of the most common mental disorders in the nation.
The program's first hour will feature the film "A New State of Mind: Ending the Stigma of Mental Illness." A panel discussion with experts discussing depression and its signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment will follow the film.
Panelists include: Erick Messias, MD, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry at the Psychiatric Research Institute, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), and medical director of the Walker Family Clinic; Justin Hunt, MD, MS, assistant professor at the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and medical director for comprehensive diagnostic service at UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute; Bill Detmers, EdD, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Arkansas Board vice president, living with depression; and Loretta Cochran, PhD, chair of the Arkansas Behavioral Health Planning and Advisory Council, living with depression.
