The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN), UALR Public Radio/KUAR FM 89.1 and William F. Laman Public Library will host a free screening of "The State of Arizona" as part of Community Cinema Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m. The screening will be held in library room 126.
"The State of Arizona" captures the explosive emotions and complex realities underlying Arizona's headline-grabbing struggle with immigration in the year after the state's passage of SB1070, its controversial "papers please" law. The stated intent of the law is to make life so miserable for illegal immigrants that they will choose to self-deport, earning it a reputation as a common sense law-enforcement tool among supporters and as a legalized form of racial profiling among detractors. Telling the stories of Arizonans on all sides of this divisive issue, this vérité documentary depicts a state and its people testing the edges of the nation's democratic values.
The screening will be held in room 126 of William F. Laman Public Library, 2801 Orange Street, North Little Rock. A community discussion led by panelists, including Senator Joyce Elliott and Sara Mullally, co-founder of El Zócalo Immigrant Resource Center, will follow the screening. Community Cinema, a free monthly screening series engaging communities through films produced by the Independent Television Service (ITVS), features monthly screenings followed by panel discussions with leading organizations, local communities and special guest speakers. The program is designed to help people learn about and get involved in the social issues raised in the documentaries.
