Arkansas PBS > Engage > Pressroom > Arkansas Champion Trees exhibit to open at AETN Feb. 18
Posted 26 Feb 2013
Following Palmers gallery talk Feb. 23, guests will preview Champion Trees, a new AETN documentary that premieres this summer and explores how these natural wonders influence and inspire the people around them.
Arkansass Champion Tree program, managed by the Arkansas Forestry Commission, recognizes those trees planted by nature or individuals that are the largest of each species in the state. Trees are compared using the American Forests Bigness Index, which includes trunk circumference, height and average crown spread. A tree must be re-measured at least every 10 years to maintain its champion status. The Arkansas State Champion Tree list is updated every five years. The most recent revision was completed June 5, 2012.
Palmer draws Arkansas's champion trees with the ultimate goal of interpreting each tree according to the season of observation, location, historic context and human connection.
This exhibit includes 18 large, colored-pencil renderings of these giants, accompanied by detailed drawings of foliage and documentary photographs. Additional information about the exhibit is available at championtreesexhibit.org.
AETN is located at 350 South Donaghey, Conway. Arkansas Champion Trees: An Artists Journey will be open to the public Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, March 15.
