The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) production department has been honored with three Communicator Awards and two Videographer Awards in the 2011 competitions.
We are delighted to be recognized by the national television community with these awards, AETN Executive Producer Carole Adornetto said. Every Arkansan can be proud of the programs that have been honored because they are all about the Natural State and its good people.
Silent Storytellers claimed a Videographer Award of Excellence and Communicator Award of Excellence in the documentary category. Produced by Hop Litzwire and AETNs Casey Sanders, Silent Storytellers explores the cultural, artistic and personal stories cemeteries provide to the surrounding communities. Guided by author and cemetery researcher Abby Burnett, the film takes viewers to cemeteries around the state and features tombstones with tales of murder, family heirlooms and folk-art inspired carvings. Silent Storytellers also features information about the best techniques for preserving, repairing and maintaining tombstones. Funding for Silent Storytellers was provided by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, a division of the Arkansas Department of Heritage.
Arkansass National Wildlife Refuges was awarded a Videographer Award of Distinction for creative graphics and a Communicator Award of Excellence in the nature/wildlife category. A special edition of Exploring Arkansas produced and hosted by Chuck Dovish, Arkansass National Wildlife Refuges highlights conservation efforts and family-friendly activities in nine of Arkansass National Wildlife Refuges.
Men & Women of Distinction: Miller Williams won a Communicator Award of Distinction in the category of history/biography in the cultural category. The film was also a finalist in the documentary category of the 61st annual Green Eyeshade Awards. Produced by AETNs Mark Wilcken, the program details the life of Williams, who might be best remembered as the man who delivered the inaugural poem at Bill Clinton's second inauguration. In the early 70s, Williams accepted a position at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where he cofounded the University of Arkansas Press and the Comparative Literature program; founded the universitys MFA program in Literary Translation; and taught and mentored emerging poets.
The Videographer Awards is an international competition designed to recognize excellence in video productions, TV commercials/news/programs and new media. The 2011 Videographer Awards competition received approximately 1,800 entries from throughout the United States and abroad.
The 2011 Communicator Award of Excellence is the most prestigious of awards of its kind offered on behalf of the International Academy of the Visual Arts. Founded by communication professionals over a decade ago, The Communicator Awards receives more than 9,000 entries from companies and agencies of all sizes, making it one of the largest awards of its kind in the world.
The Green Eyeshade Awards are a regional journalism competition hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists that recognizes outstanding journalism in 11 southeastern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
