AETN to premiere new four-part series of "Barnes and... A Conversation With" May 3

A new series of "Barnes and…A Conversation With" will premiere on the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) Thursday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m.

"Barnes and…A Conversation With," AETNs public affairs series with host Steve Barnes, will feature four interviews and air in four parts:

"Barnes and…A Conversation With Abigail Disney", airing Thursday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m.; repeats Wednesday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. Disney a filmmaker, philanthropist, scholar and grandniece to Walt Disney discusses the film she produced, "Pray the Devil Back to Hell," which premiered on PBS in October 2011. The film tells the story of how a group of women in Liberia banded together in the midst of a civil war to demand peace for their country. This episode was taped in AETN's Little Rock studio at the Arkansas Department of Education.
"Barnes and... A Conversation With Kenneth C. Barnes", airing Thursday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m.; repeats Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. Kenneth C. Barnes, chair and professor of history at the University of Central Arkansas, discusses his book "Journey of Hope: The Back-to-Africa Movement in Arkansas in the Late 1800s." He explains why a number of African-Americans from rural Arkansas, particularly Conway County and the Arkansas Delta, emigrated to Liberia from 1879 to 1899. He also shares accounts of his 1998 visit to Monrovia, Liberia, where he interviews descendants of the emigrants. This episode was taped in the AETN studios in Conway.
"Barnes and... A Conversation With Melissa Harris-Perry", airing Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m.; repeats Wednesday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. Harris- Perry is host of "Melissa Harris-Perry" on MSNBC, an author, columnist, and professor of political science and founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Project on Gender, Race, and Politics in the South at Tulane University. She discusses stereotypes of women relating to her most recent book, "SISTER CITIZEN: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America," as well as President Obama and Black America, post racialism and election 2012. This episode was taped in the Kendall Center at Philander Smith College in Little Rock during their "Bless the Mic" lecture series.
"Barnes and…A Conversation With Ernie Dumas featuring Letty Jones Duvall", airing Thursday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m.; repeats Wednesday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m. Dumas, a columnist for the Arkansas Times, discusses his most recent book, "Dearest Letty: The World War II Love Letters of Sgt. Leland Duvall." Dumas, a longtime friend and colleague of Leland Duvall now deceased, discovered a collection of love letters written by Duvall to his sweetheart, Letty Jones. The letters were organized and edited by Dumas. Included in the program are excerpts from a recent interview with Letty Jones Duvall that can be viewed in its entirety online at www.aetn.org. This episode was taped at the AETN studios in Conway.

A Conversation With," hosted by veteran journalist Steve Barnes and in production for more than 20 years, is a cutting-edge current affairs program featuring conversations with a wide variety of prominent individuals from many areas of interest and backgrounds. Previous episodes have featured: celebrated authors, such as Arkansans Charlaine Harris and Taylor Branch; noted activists Richard Leakey and Gila Svirsky; "Washington Week" moderator and PBS host Gwen Ifill; and New York Times Book Review editor Sam Tanenhaus.
