The Arkansas Educational Television Network has partnered with the Arkansas Early Childhood Association to live-stream a presentation by Dr. Lori Peek, associate professor of sociology and co-director of the Center for Disaster and Risk Analysis at Colorado State University, Thursday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m.
Peek, who is the keynote speaker for the 2016 AECA Conference, will address resilience in children after disasters. The presentation will be streamed live at aetn.org/earlyeducation. Parent and educator resources are also available on the site.
Peek has dedicated much of the past decade to understanding children's experiences in disaster, and she led the first statewide study on licensed childcare providers and disaster preparedness in Colorado. She is currently collaborating on a project, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to write a new national school safety guidebook for emergency preparedness. She is also co-founder and co-director of the Youth Creating Disaster Recovery and Resilience project and of the SHOREline youth empowerment and disaster recovery program.
In addition to her positions at Colorado State University, Peek holds an appointment as an adjunct research scientist at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University. She has published extensively on vulnerable populations in disaster and is author of 'Behind the Backlash: Muslim Americans after 9/11,' co-editor of 'Displaced: Life in the Katrina Diaspora,' and co-author of 'Children of Katrina.' Her first book, 'Behind the Backlash,' received book awards from the American Sociological Association Section on Altruism, Morality, and Social Solidarity and the Midwest Sociological Society. 'Children of Katrina,' co-authored with Dr. Alice Fothergill, recently received the Outstanding Book Award from the American Sociological Association Section on Children and Youth and was named a finalist for the Colorado Book Awards.
