The Arkansas Educational Television Network will host a free preview screening of "Masterpiece: Little Women" Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E 3rd St., Little Rock.
The screening, which will feature the first hour of the television adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's coming-of-age classic, "Little Women," is free and open to the public. Immediately following the screening, attendees are invited to the museum's Woodruff Print Shop for themed activities including writing with quill pens and seeing how a printing press from that era worked. Reservations are required; anyone interested in attending should RSVP at historicarkansas.org.
Loved by generations of women worldwide, "Little Women" was originally published in 1868. Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, the story follows sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March on their journey from childhood to adulthood. With the help of their mother, Marmee, and while their father is away at war, the girls navigate what it means to be a young woman: from sibling rivalry and first love, to loss and marriage.
Set in Concord, Massachusetts, Alcott's semi-autobiographical story became an instant bestseller when it was published and remains one of the most widely read novels of all time. A recent Harris poll listing it as one of America's 10 favorite books confirms its enduring place in the cultural landscape.
"Masterpiece: Little Women" will premiere on AETN Sunday, May 13, at 7 p.m. and conclude Sunday, May 20, at 7 p.m.
