Do you know an 8-12 year-old with culinary flair? Can you imagine his or her recipe being featured in a cookbook? Then be sure to share the news about the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge!

First Lady Michelle Obama, WGBH Boston, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are hosting the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge to encourage kids and families to create and cook healthy, delicious meals, and they have an exciting program with an awesome prize!

One winner from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and each of the U.S. territories will be chosen to represent their home in a special cookbook and to attend the Kids’ “State Dinner” at the White House!

Winning chefs will serve as healthy food ambassadors and will be flown to Washington, D.C., with a parent or guardian to attend the dinner hosted by Mrs. Obama in summer 2016.

To be eligible to enter, your child — with the help and support of an adult — must create and submit a lunch recipe that follows the MyPlate nutrition guidelines.

And this year, to celebrate the “My Plate, My State” initiative, young chefs are also encouraged to include local ingredients grown in their home states!

Recipes should also be:
  • Healthy
  • Creative
  • Affordable
  • Delicious
  • Original
So what’s left to do? Get cooking! Then, all your favorite junior chef needs is a parent or legal guardian to fill out the entry form on his or her behalf.
