Welcome to “Rise and Shine: Week 5”

We hope you have learned a lot during the first month of “Rise and Shine”! Our extensive educational program is designed to make summer learning fun and to help K-5 students gain knowledge that aligns with Arkansas academic standards. 

We have a lot of fun planned for you in Week 5. Check out what’s on the way, and find this week’s full schedule below!

Monday
Grades K-2
“Field Trip: Keep Arkansas Beautiful With the Little Rock Zoo”
Take a final journey to the Little Rock Zoo to find out what we can do in our everyday lives to keep the natural beauty of The Natural State so breathtaking!

“Time-Out With Tay”
Tay gets us up and moving with a whole new move for her “Rise and Shine” routine. You’ll have to get to your feet and pay attention if you want to keep up!

Grades 3-5
“Field Trip: Dig in at the Murfreesboro Crater of Diamonds”
Diamonds in Arkansas? Learn the history of diamond mining in The Natural State, and take a tour of the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro. Happy hunting!


Tuesday
Grades K-2
“Field Trip: A Storm is Brewing at the Mid-America Science Museum”
Return to the Mid-America Science Museum in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to learn about thunderstorms by visiting their Plasma Ball and Tesla Coil. What you’ll discover might just shock you!

“When I Was a Fifth Grader: Empathy”
In this episode, Joel and Stacey welcome the new student to the school. Susanna is from Fort Smith, Arkansas, and is a little nervous and shy about her recent move – that is until she finds out how much she has in common with her new friends!

“Mr. Steve, The Music Man: Why Ask ‘Y’?”
What decides the sound a “Y” makes? Mr. Steve the Music Man shares his latest song to get to the bottom of the question!

Grades 3-5

Grades K-2
“Field Trip: Visit the Arkansas School of Circus Arts”
Fly high with the Arkansas School of Circus Arts. Get up close and personal with a real-world trapeze artist and find out just what keeps them hanging around! 

“Zach Lunch”
In week five of “Zach Lunch,” Doggy Bag is in the spotlight as he shares everything he loves about his favorite food group: dairy! He and Zach discuss the bountiful benefits of digesting dairy.

Grades 3-5

Thursday

“Field Trip: See What’s Growing at the Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks”
Visit the only butterfly house in Arkansas with this visit to the Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks! You’ll also learn what seeds to sow to grow a butterfly garden in your very own backyard.

“Robbie Rocket” 
In this installment, Robbie has all but given up in finding Earth – until he bumps into someone who knows Earth really well. The Moon is the Earth’s satellite, and she loves to dance with the Earth, always reflecting the light of the Sun!

Grades 3-5

Friday
Grades K-2
“Field Trip: Get Ready for Lift-off at the Arkansas Air and Military Museum”
Take a tour through the history of flight in Arkansas at the Arkansas Air and Military Museum, from the first flight in Fayetteville to a hangar full of harrowing air-bound artifacts!

“Blueberry’s Clubhouse”
While Blueberry is growing more nervous about the impending kite festival, Camp Counselor Carol is afraid to go to the doctor. Blueberry and Max learn that – no matter how old you are – you’re never too old to face your fears!

“Fun Friday: Scavenger Hunt With Meghan Ables”
2016 Arkansas Teacher of the Year Meghan Ables leads students on a scavenger hunt through the teacher house in search of things that are similar to others!  

Grades 3-5
"Field Trip: See What’s Growing at the Arkansas Botanical Gardens"

“Writer’s Contest Winner: The Adventures of John”
Elijah Whitaker shares his original story and illustrations, “The Adventures of John in the Underground City,” where an everyday camping trip leads to the discovery of an underground city of gold!


Arkansas Teacher of the Year Highlight
Meghan Ables is the 2016 Arkansas Teacher of the Year from Stuttgart High School. Meghan is bringing her “Arkansas AMI” experience back to “Rise and Shine” to teach social studies lessons to both the K-2 and 3-5 grade bands.

Power Packets
Request your “Rise and Shine” Power Packets – free summer learning activity kits that follow along with the series – to help extend learning beyond the broadcast. Power Packets are available in English and Spanish and can be downloaded or requested to be mailed directly to homes, day cares, summer camps and more. Both the request form for printed packets and PDFs of the activities can be found at myarpbs.org/riseandshine.
