Do you know a 5-8 year old who would like to learn about creative coding? Don’t miss a chance to register for our free ScratchJr Code-to-Learn camp June 21-24! This special camp is designed to introduce kids to creative computer coding through activities that allow them to create their own stories, games and collages with the PBS KIDS ScratchJr tablet app.

The ScratchJr Code-to-Learn Camp will use collaborative, digital and physical activities to teach children about computer coding. But, with PBS KIDS ScratchJr, kids don’t just learn to code, they code to learn!

What is PBS KIDS ScratchJr?

It’s a developmentally appropriate creative coding app for children ages five through eight that features characters from a number of PBS KIDS programs (including “Wild Kratts,” “Nature Cat,” “Ready, Jet, Go!,” “Odd Squad” and more). With ScratchJr, kids can make character move, jump, dance and sing — and, in the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects and express themselves creatively.

You can learn more about the app and the research and brilliant minds behind its creation here.

What is creative coding?

Creative coding is an approach to developing computation thinking skills that champions young people’s engagement. It teaches children to code through interest-driven imagining, designing and creating, which allows them to share computational artifacts (AKA their ScratchJr projects).

When children learn to code creatively with the ScratchJr app, they learn how to create and express themselves creatively with technology! They’re not just passively using tech to play games. In the process, they’re also empowered to solve problems, design their own projects, demonstrate knowledge and develop computational thinking skills, which are the foundation for later academic success!

How will the PBS KIDS ScratchJr Code-to-Learn Camp at AETN work?

The camp will be held Tuesday, June 21, through Friday, June 24, at AETN headquarters from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Materials and a daily snack will be provided by AETN. There is no cost for this camp, but space is limited. Be sure to reserve your spot soon! Registration closes Monday, May 30, or as soon as all spots are filled.
