Learning for summer — and beyond! - AETN PBS KIDS ScratchJr Camps

This summer, AETN was proud to receive a PBS KIDS ScratchJr grant made possible by the Verizon Foundation to help Arkansas students between the ages of five and eight get started with Creative Coding!

More than 50 campers joined us at our Conway camp for a four-day event, and we had a great time learning and exploring the world the ScratchJr app opens. This approach to the development of computational thinking skills champions the process of engaging young people in interest-driven projects, which allows them to imagine, design, create and share computational artifacts!

But it’s not just about coding skills. When youngsters engage in creative coding, they learn how to create and express themselves with technology. In the process, they’re empowered to solve problems, design their own projects, demonstrate their knowledge and develop thinking skills that are foundational for later academic success.

At our Conway camp, children dove into creative coding by taking on the challenge of creating their own stories, games and collages with the PBS KIDS ScratchJr tablet app. Each activity focused on a different PBS KIDS show and was designed to engage through giving kids the opportunity to create their own projects featuring the PBS KIDS characters they already know and love!

A few of our favorite activities? We loved seeing students help Peg and Cat solve a “Big Problem” by helping rescue Peg from a tree, the great creature power suits campers designed for a Wild Kratts game, and how they flew rocket ships to the moon with “Ready Jet Go!” in an outer space exploration activity.

At the the camps, students also played games, watched PBS KIDS episodes and did additional activities that related to the daily ScratchJr lessons. After working in the app, students also presented and shared their projects with us!

Want a chance to help the kids in your life get started with Scratch Jr and creative coding? You can download the app for FREE! Find details about downloading for Apple or Android devices here.
