Chef Talk — “Cook With Brooks: Country Pumpkins”

How funny it is that in every episode of the show so far, I have found a part of myself. No matter if it was picking apples, making cider or digging irrigation trenches — always something from my past! I grew up in rural Alabama, with chickens, cows, corn, fruits and vegetables, and “Cook With Brooks” keeps bringing me full circle. I made my first-ever money on my Uncle Patterson's farm and, now, I get to play around on great pieces of land like McGarrah Farms in Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

In this week’s episode, “Cook With Brooks: Country Pumpkins,” you can catch me on my first hayride since my childhood. You’ll also see how the kids visiting from around the region get a big kick out of all the spooky stuff along the way. On this journey, we’ll learn about the McGarrah family and how the tradition of producing smiles is being carried by the younger generations.

On our visit, we’ll also learn when the pumpkins are planted and why. Also, we’ll have a great lesson to help us understand the difference between carving pumpkins and cooking pumpkins.

After we’ve gotten that down, we’ll put the knowledge to good use. Just wait until we head into the kitchen! I’m going to show you how to make a great pumpkin pie filling from scratch with the “cooking kind of pumpkins.” I sure hope your family will enjoy it!
