“Blueberry’s Clubhouse” – from the Arkansas Arts Center, state’s premier theatre for young audiences – shows students the connections between science, engineering, and the arts! This week on “Arkansas AMI,” Blueberry the puppet and friends design and construct shadow puppets with supplies found in their own homes and encourages the students of Arkansas to join them in the challenge. Now, we’re here to share even more!
Arkansas Arts Center Children’s Theatre’s Great Puppet Challenge
Artists are creative problem-solvers. Creative problem-solvers are people who make connections between seemingly unconnected subjects, and artists do this every day! Whether it’s a visual artist who’s using watercolor to paint the intricacies of a human cell or set designers completing complicated math problems to design within a theatre’s budget and space limitations, artists regularly bridge the subjects of math, science, and engineering with literature, art, theatre, dance and music.
”The Great Puppet Challenge” is a K-5th grade STEAM curriculum that facilitates students through a process of making these connections for themselves. In the curriculum, each grade is given a different kind of puppet to “engineer” based on the science or math standards for their level. Through “The Great Puppet Challenge,” students will exercise the creative problem-solving skills artists practice as daily habits.
