Biz Kid$ contest looking for young visionaries - win $3,000!

Are there kids in your community who want to save the world? If they put that desire into a business plan, they could win big! The hunt is on for America's most worthy, young social entrepreneurs.

Fledgling visionaries can compete for $3,000 and mentoring from a top business expert in the new Biz Kid$ contest, Build Your Social Biz.

Young business owners who have an idea for improving their community are invited to upload a one-minute video to explain their idea. The contest is open to existing businesses or enterprises that are still a gleam in an entrepreneur's eye.

Entries are due December 31, 2012. First place will win $3,000 and a lunch with a special guest; runner up will win $1,500; and three honorable mentions will win $500 each. All finalists will be paired with an expert mentor from Ernst & Young LLP, chosen to fit the nature of their business.

Social entrepreneurs are people who try to make a difference in the world with their business. They use their business structure or profits to effect a social, cultural or environmental change. The social biz is not a limited-period fundraising vehicle - it's an actual business.

The Emmy Award-winning public television series Biz Kid$ takes a fun and funny approach to financial literacy with comic sketches, satires and silly antics that appeal to kids and adults alike.  Hosted by a group of Biz Kids, the series teaches the basics of smart money management based on national financial literacy educational standards as well as the importance of giving back to the community.

Biz Kid$ also features a website,, with free activities and lesson plans for educators and parents to use in conjunction with the show. The free curriculum, which has been presented to more than a million students, includes downloadable lesson plans and video segments that illustrate the topic. The site also offers other resources and a monthly newsletter. In addition to classroom use, Biz Kid$ lessons are taught by credit union professionals, Ernst & Young employees, the IRS, and volunteers at schools, as well as through after-school programs such as Boys & Girls Clubs, DECA clubs, and Girl Scouts in communities across the country.
