Remembering President Kennedy

Last month marked the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's visit to Arkansas to dedicate Greers Ferry Dam. This was one of his very last public appearances before his assassination on Nov. 22, 1963. As you prepare to share President Kennedy's legacy with your students, take advantage of the resources brought to you by AETN.

"Cuban Missile Crisis: Three Men Go to War" - These video clips, all downloadable and all less than 10 minutes in length, depict various aspects of the Cuban Missile Crisis. They include portions of "the scariest speech in American history", the potential outcomes of a nuclear strike, communications amongst Kennedy, Castro, and Krushchev, and an explanation of Kennedy's description of the time period as "the most dangerous time for the human race." The clips include voice recordings, original videos and photos, and commentary by historians and others. A background essay and discussion questions are included.

"Inaugural Address" - This set of resources includes an image of Kennedy's handwritten inaugural address, a transcript of the speech, and a background essay.

"Establishment of the Peace Corps" - This set of resources includes images of the executive order that established the Peace Corps, a transcript of the order, and a background essay.

CCSS Institute #10 - Special Education Standards-Based IEPs

This course focuses on the process of developing Individualized Education Plans for students with disabilities based on the Common Core State Standards. The activities will enable educators to practice using a variety of data sources to write clear and objective present levels of academic and functional performance, and develop quality annual goals designed to provide meaningful access to the general education curriculum.

"Effective Strategies to Teach About the Holocaust Using Echoes and Reflections"

Echoes and Reflections equips teachers with the tools they need to help today's students study the Holocaust as a significant event in human history, recognize the complexity of individual choices, and define the role and responsibility of the individual to uphold the principles of a democracy. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of "Echoes and Reflections - Teacher's Resource Guide."

An on-site course will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the AETN studios, 350 South Donaghey, Conway.
