What are the Arkansas Boards and Commissions?
There are over 250 boards and commissions in the state of Arkansas. They are independent bodies with most of the membership being appointed by the governor, although there are exceptions.
Most boards are created by the legislature through the statutory process. Members serve for terms that vary in length depending on the board or commission, and the terms are usually staggered with other members to maintain some continuity as individuals rotate on and off.
Some boards provide oversight of state government functions, while others are regulatory in nature over professions or industry. Others serve solely in an advisory capacity.
Most boards meet at least quarterly, some will meet less often, and others may meet once a month or more as needed.
Most board members are not compensated for their service, although they are usually reimbursed for travel expenses.
